Why Tuesday is My Favorite Day of the Week (Hint: Photos and Travel!)

“I’ll have a shot of Paris this morning, side of Guatemala.  Perhaps I’ll chase it with a small sip of Bhutan.”

How do you quench your travel thirst with little sips instead of taking a trip and gulping down a glass?

Sometimes we’re out having the adventure, taking the world in with our own two eyes.  Other times, whether we have to or (gasp!) we want to, we are at home.  These days, we’re likely staring at a screen for most of the day.

I know, I know.  You’re itching to go and see that view, that monument, that street food…for yourself.  The world is changing — international travel is cheaper, easier, and faster than ever before.  Your age-old excuses for why you’re not going to see for yourself are starting to lose their legitimacy.

Yet travel just something we can all pursue in that moment.  It’s important to dream, it’s even more important to plan.  As long as you’re setting in motion the steps  to take a journey, whether that’s out your front door and around the block — or out your front door and onto a plane, you’ll get there.

A lot of travel media would have you believe that it’s all or nothing, it’s black and white — either you’re traveling, or you’re not.

Yet there’s a little gray area that exists — and I think it’s what makes look for travel photographers to follow on Instagram, and what keeps us reading travel blogs.  I know I did, long before I built up the courage to truly prioritize travel in my life.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s still no substitute for the actual experience.  Part-time travelers aspire to travel, but we don’t want to travel every day of our lives.

Luckily, we don’t have to.

Most mornings I wake up and browse the images on my two favorite social platforms.  I am consistently amazed at the places people are, around the world, at any given moment.  I can open up my Instagram to a view of a foreign land, and a snapshot of life elsewhere — all before I even place my feet on the ground beside my bed to start my day.

Part of being a part-time traveler is learning how to whet your appetite for travel on a daily basis, even when you’re perfectly content sitting on your couch with a cup of coffee or meeting friends for lunch in your city.

How do I do this?  It’s simple, really.

Travel Photography on Instagram

Step one: engage with others’ travel photos.

Step two: share your own.

The result?  Daily inspiration.  Taking part in a moment, or a place, or an experience that inspires you.  Sharing glimpses of the moments that already have…revisiting your journey and the sensations, emotions, and lessons you earned and taking those forward with you into your day.  Perhaps even inspiring someone else’s journey in the process.

I look forward to reflecting on my travel experiences once a week, and treasure interacting with you as we seek and share slices of this beautiful world.

Travel is a sensory experience, but there’s a reason they call it “seeing the world.”

  1. It definitely took us a long time to get inspired enough to travel, and Instagram was a huge part of that! You made a great point by saying “It’s important to dream, it’s even more important to plan.” It’s a lesson that every traveler learns with time and one that new travelers need to come to before taking the big plunge.

    You’re awesome 🙂
