Well said Dan, and I’m so glad this resonates for you! Honestly when I wrote it I was scared to put my honest thoughts out there…but it’s crazy how many of us are feeling the same things about Instagram and our trips. Thank you for reading and for continuing the conversation. Happy travels! 🙂

This has been bugging the crap out of me lately, both from the perspective of Instagram’s affect on places I love and the seeming loss of creativity. Everyone seems perfectly happy to keep taking / sharing the exact same pictures and it’s so annoying! BUT, I’ve gotten sucked into it myself, admittedly. If I don’t have much time in a spot, I would Google around to find good spots to shoot, and inevitably I’ll find a spot that’s super “Instagrammable”. I’ve now stopped looking and just accept that I might miss something. I’d rather miss something because I just didn’t see it as opposed to miss something because I was so focused on what everyone else was doing!

Good stuff and thanks for the conversation!

Thank you for your comment, Darja! Yes, I think the way travel is generally depicted on Instagram has always rubbed me wrong, mostly for the reasons that I feel it takes away from creativity, deep storytelling, and authentic voices. We can still take that back!

YES. We lose a lot of the adventure and individuality by trying to conform to a standard set by Instagram. Thank you for reading and sharing your thoughts, Rachelle!

One of the reasons I love to go on road trips is because the journey is experienced, not necessarily documentable. And lately a lot of the places that I’ve been traveling to aren’t the kind that we find as we scroll through our feed. Your right – individuality and uniqueness doesn’t seem to be valued, which is why we need voices like yours and people who still believe in the thrill of adventure…without always having to look through a lens for ‘gram-ability.

I was shocked to hear that “instragrammability” was such an important factor in the travel decision-making process. Just wow. Wonder if Instagram founders ever thought they’d have such an impact on the world. My personal takeaway from this only strengthens what I believed already – be real, be creative and share authentic stories. Like your article 😉
